On February 22nd, Girls’ Generation took home two awards on the First Gaon Chart KPOP Awards show.

Girls’ Generation had the highest selling album by a Korean artist on the Oricon chart in Japan and highest selling album on the Gaon chart in Korea in 2011.

Girls’ Generation Become ‘Flowers’ in Third e-ma Commercial

The third e-ma Nodoame (Translator’s note: nodoame means throat candy) commercial featuring Girls’ Generation is set to air on February 25th in Japan.
The theme for the first e-ma commercial was “dinner party”, which was accompanied by the Japanese version of “Gee”. The second commercial’s theme was “dollhouse”, while the song “Bad Girl” was playing in the background. For the latest commercial, the theme will be “a flower that blooms in the city” with the new song from the re-packaged Japanese album “Time Machine” being used as the background track.
The members of Girls’ Generation represent a “refreshing flower”, which draws comparison to the refreshing feeling a customer will experience when eating the candy. During the commercial, the girls are flower petals that eventually become a “beautiful flower” when all nine members gather together. The commercial ends with the girls standing in a row before a large metropolis as dawn approaches. In that ending moment, the theme is complete as the “flowers” bloom beautifully and with pride.
Filming for the commercial took place in the outskirts of Seoul in order to accommodate the increasingly busy schedules of Girls’ Generation. Throughout the entire filming session, the girls never complained and continued to work diligently with smiles on their faces.

Taeyeon Continues to MC “Gaon Chart Awards” Despite an Injury
Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon received praise when she injured her toe and continued to emcee the Gaon Chart Awards.
Taeyeon injured her toenail while she performed her MC duties with Joo Younghoon in “The First Gaon Chart K-pop Awards” that was held at the Samsung Card Hall in Blue Square.
Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon and Yoona accepted the “Special Oricon Award” on behalf of all the members. After Yoona’s acceptance speech, she asked Taeyeon to deliver her own speech. At this time, Taeyeon said her acceptance speech despite still being in the MC stands.
At this, Joo Younghoon explained, “Taeyeon has ripped her toenail during the awards and she is still doing her duties as an MC while fighting through the pain.”
Taeyeon replied by saying, “You don’t have to say that with so much detail. I’ve only gotten hurt a little bit,” and eased the fans’ hearts.
But Taeyeon had to put on slippers instead of high heels because of her injury.
Fans expressed their sadness by saying, “If her toenail was flipped then the pain would be horrible”, “There should be limitations to dancing”, “Taeyeon is really admirable. She didn’t show her pain..She has more than enough rights to be the kid leader”, and, “Make sure to get medical attention for it”.

‘Wild Romance’ Airs Its Final Episode
On February 23rd, Jessica’s first drama, “Wild Romance”, came to an end. Jessica appeared in ten out of sixteen episodes as Kang Jonghee, a painter who bites people she cares about, holds her liquor, loves her cat, and is even bipolar. Despite intense overseas schedules in New York, Paris and Bangkok, she delivered solid performances in each episode, exceeding expectations for her first time acting.
Though it had an overall straightforward plot, “Wild Romance” featured unpredictable, and often unbelievable, twists and turns that gave Jessica many chances to show off her acting talents. Fans were especially delighted, and sometimes horrified, to see Jessica act in a variety of scenes involving holding a baby, having a seizure, washing a cat, painting, and even kissing. Not known for her cooking skills, one of Jessica’s most challenging acting scenes came in episode twelve, where her character cooks a meal. After watching her act in these different situations, many viewerscomplimented Jessica on her ability to portray both a light and dark side to her character.
Jessica also sat down for several interviews about “Wild Romance”, one of which she described the drama as a learning experience and also thanked her seniors Lee Dongwook and Lee Siyoung. Having proven that she can adapt to performing in a variety of scenes while juggling activities with Girls’ Generation, Jessica will hopefully soon be able to apply what she has learned from “Wild Romance” in future dramas. Until then, we will look forward to Jessica’s return to the Korean drama scene.

Girls’ Generation’s New PV for ‘Time Machine’ to Feature Imada Kouji
Girls’ Generation’s first Japanese album, “Girls’ Generation”, which was released on June 31st 2011, reached a shipping record of one million copies, a first in the history of Japan as a Korean artist . There will be a new music video to continue the rapid advancement of Girls’ Generation into Japan. The music video will be for their new song “Time Machine”, and comedian Imada Kouji will appear in the video.
“Time Machine” is a new ballad song that was recorded for last year’s repackaged album release on December 28th, titled “Re:Package Album: Girls’ Generation ~The Boys~”. On February 25th, the song will also be promoted in Girls’ Generation’s CF of UHA Mikukato “E-ma Nodoame”.
Imada Kouji is a self-proclaimed Girls’ Generation fan and leads in knowledge and enthusiasm in the entertainment world, so the staff of Girls’ Generation made the offer to include him.
On the day of shooting, which fell on Valentine’s Day, Imada was not concerned that it was a day off and continued on with the schedule. He was fully motivated and looked forward the challenge. Imada Kouji was often seen as a strong man, but for this he passionately acted out the role of a weak man. He was to cry alone in a room while remembering about the unforgettable past.
Imada Kouji commented on his performance and said, “This is my happiest job ever since a couple of years ago. Before the manager finished talking, I enthusiastically said, ‘I’ll do it.’ The filming was really fun. I gave it my all. When I saw the proposal written with ‘Girls’ Generation Tenth Member’, I felt complete like cutting the goal-tape. I want to receive a business card that says ‘Girls’ Generation Tenth Member’. As one of the fans of Girls’ Generation in the entertainment world, I’m glad they offered me the spot. To the other entertainers who are fans of Girls’ Generation, I feel like I have to tell them the stage has changed (laughs).”
Furthermore, the music video for “Time Machine” is set to be released in early March. For the girls, this music video concept is something that they have not done so far and it seems that the video was influenced by the atmosphere of the teaser. The thirty-second version of the teaser can be seen onGirls’ Generation’s official Japan Facebook page which was opened on February 24th, while the fifteen-second version will be broadcast on Japanese TV on February 25th.

Girls’ Generation Number One on Forbes Korea Power Celebrity Top 40 for Two Consecutive Years
The nine member girl group Girls’ Generation has been chosen as Korea’s best “Power Celebrity” for the second year in a row (since 2011). Forbes Korea published their first issue nine years ago, and this was the result of the “Korea’s Power Celebrity 40″ survey, where a celebrity is defined as a famous person who is well known amongst the general public. Forbes Korea releases forty people out of a total of one hundred based on the categories of earnings, influence, reputation, and professionalism. This follows the same survey method of Forbes “Celebrity 100″ in the US.
Girls’ Generation landed in the number one spot this year. They came in first and second place in the categories for number of articles published, and television commercials plus broadcasted activities respectively. Girls’ Generation is also the most wanted television guest. They shot 36 television commercials, which helps celebrities raise their fame. Their third album, “The Boys”, which was released last year, sold 380,000 copies, making it the best selling album of 2011.

Last Episode of ‘Girls’ Generation and Dangerous Boys’ to Be Broadcast Next Week
The last episode of jTBC’s “Girls’ Generation and Dangerous Boys” will be broadcast on March 4th.
Girls’ Generation, who were the boys’ mentors, faced several difficulties throughout the show but did not falter. Even though one of the boys left halfway through the show, the members of Girls’ Generation continued to give warm advice and cold warnings to the boys even when they were not recording for the show.
With the help of Girls’ Generation’s earnest hearts, the boys improved tremendously and not only impressed the girls, but the staff as well.
With the first recording session happening way back on November 20th of last year, Girls’ Generation could not hide their sadness upon saying their goodbyes. Sunny, in particular, mentioned that Kim Hwehoon even appeared in her dreams, while Seohyun, who received the nickname “Enraged Seohyun”, showed tears during the last interview session and said, “I think I did poorly with the kids but I have also learned a lot through this program.”
Even the boys looked like they couldn’t believe that they were actually saying goodbye to each other, and one of them even shed tears after filming ended.

Girls’ Generation Contributes to the Success of K-pop in Japan

On February 16th, Oricon, a company which reports music sales in Japan, announced that Korean music CD and DVD products have seen the largest market scale increase in Japan yet. Though sales in the music disc marketplace have been continually decreasing the past five years, sales of Japanese music discs by Korean artists rapidly increased in 2011 and reached a record high of 24,470,000,000 yen.
The total sales from Girls’ Generation’s album, “Girls’ Generation” (sales in 2011: 2,960,000,000 yen), and KARA’s album, “Super Girl” (sales in 2011: 2,080,000,000 yen), were a drastic 22.3% increase compared to last year’s sales during the same months. Since the survey began in 2008, sales by Korean artists have increased each year. From 2009 (before the advance of KARA and Girls’ Generation to Japan) to 2011, the sales share of Korean artists in the Japanese market rose by 4.8% and increased the sales base by 2.3 times. In 2010 alone, the market share grew from 6% to 7.8%.
After 2010′s whirlwind Japan debuts by Korean girl groups KARA and Girls’ Generation, 2011 saw many male artists making their Japan debut. These artists included 2PM, Jang Geunsuk, SHINee, Beast, and others. A total of ten singles and albums from Tohoshinki, Big Bang, Girls’ Generation, KARA, Jang Geunsuk, T-ara, 2NE1, and more reached number one on 2011′s weekly rankings for music sales. This was the highest number of first place rankings by Korean artists since the beginning of album rankings in 1970, exceeding the previous record of five in 2008.
Furthermore, in the ranking for yearly album sales, Girls’ Generation’s “Girls’ Generation” (642,000 copies sold) and KARA’s “Super Girl” (451,000 copies sold) both entered the top ten. Sales by artists also reached a new high, with KARA (4,930,000,000 yen, 4th), Girls’ Generation (4,050,000,000 yen, 5th), and Tohoshinki (2,660,000,000 yen, 9th) in the top ten of total yearly sales.

Girls’ Generation Plays Games at Retreat With ‘Dangerous Boys’

With fluttering hearts, Girls’ Generation and the “Dangerous Boys” took a retreat from the city.
This week’s episode of jTBC’s “Girls’ Generation and Dangerous Boys” draws a picture of a cheerful and moving MT (Editor’s note: MT stands for membership training, a time to bond with one another through various activities) scene with the boys, who are tired from the dance practices they had in preparation for the Street Jam competition.
During the day of recording, the boys’ mothers visited as special guests. When asked about their first impressions of Girls’ Generation, the mothers praised the members’ beauty by saying, “As the boys always say, you look like dolls.” They also did not hesitate to express their gratitude towards the girls, who did their best as their sons’ mentors.
During the MT, the members of Girls’ Generation and the boys played a game of “Yut” (Editor’s note: A traditional Korean family game) to create a warm atmosphere, with a massage chair as a prize. The mothers and sons also had a meaningful time talking to one another and understanding each other better. When seeing the boys and their mothers having a fun time together, Yoona even mentioned that she was jealous, and that she wanted a son for herself.
The MT scenes with Girls’ Generation and their mentees will be aired on February 19th at 7:30PM KST.

Updated: Jessica Talks About Her First Attempt at Acting
Update with new interview:
With the end of “Wild Romance” approaching, Girls’ Generation’s Jessica took the time for an interview to reflect on her first acting experience. She show her appreciation for her fellow actors, saying, “Because it was my first attempt at acting, it was a nerve-wracking and fun job. I was lacking, but I want to say thank you to Lee Dongwook and Lee Siyoung for being able to act with them.”
Jessica also brought up the possibility of acting in the future, hinting, “I will work hard to be active as Girls’ Generation’s Jessica, and to meet you all as actress Jessica through future works.” Finally, she thanked the audience of “Wild Romance”, saying, “Thank you very much for loving Jonghee so much. Thank you to all the viewers who watched ‘Wild Romance’, and I love you.”
The final two episodes of “Wild Romance” will air next week on February 22nd and February 23rd.
Jessica expressed positive feelings on her first time acting in a drama.
Girls’ Generation’s Jessica is playing the role of Kang Jonghee in the KBS 2TV Wednesday/Thursday drama, “Wild Romance”. Although Jessica has starred in a musical before, this would be her first attempt in acting.
The Jessica we saw through the interview was a person who was nervous but overflowing with willpower. On the subject of new challenges, Jessica stated, “I am having fun with it. I wish there was more time, so I’m sad.” Jessica also said, “It is true that my appearance on ‘Wild Romance’ was decided in a rush. I didn’t have a lot of time to prepare because there was also a lot of overseas schedules for Girls’ Generation. I feel a bit sad that I couldn’t focus on just the drama. However, I’m really happy that I could experience something new.”
Girls’ Generation is currently active not only in Korea, but also in Asia, as well as the United States and Europe. Despite all the activities they had, it did not change during the filming of “Wild Romance”. Jessica even had to return to Korea first, alone, after completing schedules overseas. Jessica, who usually sleeps a lot, had to continue with acting with barely any sleep. Jessica said, “I could not get a lot of sleep. I was worried I would look tired in the drama. It is true that I was physically exhausted.” She laughed and added, “However, there were a lot of things that I learned through this drama.”
In the drama, Jessica had to cry in many scenes, which is difficult when acting in a drama for the first time. On this, Jessica stated, “Emotional scenes were actually the most fun for me. I like myself focusing and immersing myself in an emotion.”
Recently, Jessica’s character was “dumped” by the male lead in the drama, Park Mooyeol, who is played by Lee Dongwook. When asked about how it felt to be “dumped”, her cheeky personality showed: “I’ve never been dumped this badly even in real life before.” After laughing, she said, “When I was concentrating on the emotions while acting, it actually hurt my pride.”
Through a recent interview with NewsEn, Jessica talked about her kissing scene with Lee Dongwook that garnered much attention not too long ago. Jessica recalled, “I’ve acted out a kiss scene before. But at that time I ‘acted’ like I kissed someone, so I was really nervous about this time.”
She laughed and said, “Before we started filming, I was told, ‘You really have to do this kiss scene,’ and I got nervous.” Jessica seemed shy about it and also added, “I shot the kiss scene comfortably by just going along with Lee Dongwook sunbae’s lead.”
When asked, “Were there any NGs?” she answered, “There were NGs… There were fewer NGs than I thought. But there were a lot of cut scenes, so we had to shoot a lot.”

Sunny gave her thoughts on becoming a solo MC for the first time on a music program.

I will do my best to lead the program to success.”
She continued, “Honestly, I’m really nervous, because this is my first time MCing alone. I am anticipating the first recording with a fluttering heart.”
Kim Changwoo, the production director of SBS MTV, revealed, “I’ve produced many music programs, but they all lacked variety. Sooyoung Declines Her Role in the Drama ‘Speed’

Girls’ Generation’s Sooyoung has declined the main role in the TV Chosun drama “Speed”. A staff member from SM Entertainment revealed, “We have made our final decision: Sooyoung will not be casted in ‘Speed’. We are planning to look for another project while focusing on Girls’ Generation’s schedules.”
Sooyoung strongly considered accepting the role when she first received news about her potential casting in “Speed” last November. However, Girls’ Generation’s overseas schedules increased in number, while the production and filming of the drama did not go as planned, which left Sooyoung and SM Entertainment no choice but to decline the role.
A member of the production staff said, “‘Speed’ was unable to sign any contracts with top actors (in the industry) and complete the cast list. This resulted in a situation where they could not even begin filming. It seems that this was the reason why Sooyoung and SM Entertainment decided that she would not accept the role in the drama.”
Sooyoung showed her potential as an actress in 2008, acting in the KBS 2TV sitcom “Unstoppable Marriage” and in the movie “Hello Schoolgirl”, leading many people to show interest in her debut as a main character. Unfortunately, fans will have to wait for another time.

Bangkok still got to see Girls’ Generation this year though, when they made their final stop for their 2nd Asia tour there on February 12th.

Yuri Gives Chocolates to ‘Fashion King’ Staff for Valentine’s Day

Girls’ Generation’s Yuri warmed the hearts of the staff of her upcoming SBS Monday/Tuesday drama, “Fashion King”.
According to the staff, during the filming of “Fashion King” on February 14th Yuri gave staff members chocolates and a card carrying a support message reading, “Our ‘Fashion King’ family who is always working hard, eat something sweet, and fighting.”
In order to prepare chocolates that Yuri liked, it was said that she went around markets and malls in New York for four hours. She stated, “I prepared this as a way of giving a little joy to the staff members who are separated from their families/lovers in order to film [the drama]. It seems they all enjoyed it so I’m satisfied.”
The staff stated, “I think getting Valentine chocolates from heartthrob Yuri is better than getting them from a significant other. I don’t think I’ll be able to forget 2012 Valentine’s Day.”
